I'm almost certain it says Waterton, but if you'd like to look yourself on the 1871 census, it's Sarah Thompson, aged 43 (she was aged 37 ten years earlier, and called Sarah Hey!), in Batley. Thanks.

mjn,

I've just had a look at the original image for 1861 on Ancestry, and it definitely says Waterloo. I don't even think it's difficult to read, although Ancestry have it transcribed as Vaterlos, so perhaps Waterton wasn't too bad a guess.

Anyway, following up from that, Christopher Hey married Sarah Fox or Sarah Ann Milnes in Dewsbury, Sept quarter 1842 (from FreeBMD but you can see it on Ancestry as well).

Sadly, Familysearch doesn't reveal any obvious candidates for Sarah in Huddersfield/Waterloo, or anywhere else for that matter. In fact, if she was born in Waterloo, she could have been christened in Almondbury, looking at the map.

I think your best course of action now is to send for the marriage cert (assuming you think I've got the right marriage!)  and see what other names and information you can glean from this.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, just realised I'm looking at the wrong census (doh!). Yes the 1871 does say Waterton, but there seems to be no such place in Yorkshire, either in the gazetteer or on Genuki. It's only two letters different, though, so maybe the enumerator got it wrong: t for an l and n for an o. They're easily confused if the handwriting's bad.

Still, my suggestion about the marriage certificate stands.

Thanks again, Jon. I already have the marriage certificate which shows Sarah Fox married Christopher Hey in Dewsbury in 1842. Her father is given as Isaac Fox, a coal miner. Next step will have to be the Borthwick to look at the parish registers. I don't suppose I'll find a parish called Waterloo there though!

It would certainly appear that the Sarah Fox baptised in Rothwell could be yours as there is a Fox family in Batley in 1841.

Isaac 40
Bathsheba 40
James 15
Sarah 15
John 13

And those were the parents names of the baptism in Rothwell weren't they.

Thanks, Christine. I'm sure you're right. An early trip to the Borthwick Institute is needed. I just hope they've got the registers for Rothwell. They definitely have some of the Batley ones.

I have just noticed that you have ancestors from Flockton, I have details of burials there 1813-1899 so if you need anyone looking up I can do that for you.

Thanks for the offer, Christine. My interests in Flockton are the Naylors and the Days. If you can find any of these, I'd be very grateful.

Hi again,

Could you pm me your email address as it will be easier for me to scan the Naylors and Days and send them to you as there are quite a few.
