Darby Docray from Elphin
« on: Friday 15 February 08 12:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi.  I am trying to find out any information about a Darby Docray or Dockery.

Darby Docray was a yarn merchant. He usually visited the fairs in the western part of Ireland to buy yarn from merchants. In his prime, he was an active man and popular with those he bought yarn from. He usually rode a large black horse, and when passing through the crowds at the fairs, these words were passed on before him, "Clear the way for Darby Docray". When he retired from business he was a wealthy man.
Darby was married to Mary (surname unknown).
In 1806 at Elphin, Ireland, Mary gave birth to a daughter who they named Margaret Docray.  They were catholics.

Have you checked LDS catalogue to see if the local church records have been microfilmed (and if they go back far enough)?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Yes I have, unfortunately with no luck.  Thanks for replying.  Unfortunately I live in Australia and am not able to travel to Ireland to physically do the research.

Hello TheFrenchDetective,

Welcome to RootsChat.

If you use the Eircom Phonebook you'll find a couple of Dockerys listed. There's no need to enter the full address  ... Elphin or Roscommon is adequate www.eircomphonebook.ie

There are thirty three posts relating to the Dockery surname in Ireland on Genforum http://tiny.cc/YjLtG

1796 Irish Flax Growers List (or Spinning Wheel Census)
The only Dockery families in Ireland at that time came from Roscommon and four of them came from Creeve. There are no Docrays listed. www.failteromhat.com/flax1796.php
