Thanks!  I've hardly got started - a complete newbie!

No I didn't have the 1891 details - thanks!  Is this the data one gets from paying £5 and having a five-day look-up binge?  ;D

Already puzzled by the fact that my maternal grandmother is listed as "stepdaughter".. !

Well, she's Alfred Ashby's stepdaughter. Her mother married him in 1899:

Marriage Mar 1899 Rugby registration district 6d 628
Alfred Ashby - Harriet(t) Loydall

This seems to be Harriett's first marriage (to Edith's father):

Marriages Dec 1888 Rubgy 6d 881
Harriett Hirons - Henry Loydall

There's a *possible* death for a Henry Loydall as follows:
Sep 1897 Stratford registration district 6d 490
Henry Loydall age 34

If it's him then it looks like he died away from hom - Stratford registration district covers these places:
 http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/stratford%20on%20avon.html

 :)

PS I don't know where you pay £5 - ancestry offer free 14-days trials I believe  :D

Wow!  This is quite encouraging!  What you say seems right because I remember my mother talking about "Nanny Ashby".

This is a great start for me. Thanks for your tips.

Bit confused about the lookups process - if I do a "person" search at:

nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/

...and click on a name result, I'm redirected to their affiliate (friendsreunited) and asked for payment to see the documents.

Sorry I'm just learning!   ::)

Yes, unfortunately I think the 1901 census is only available at pay sites, either on subscription or pay to view basis. I never use the site you mention therefore I'm not sure how much you get for your £5

I know I started with the ancestry free trial - only thing is that they ask for your credit card details and you better not forget to cancel the subscription when the 14 days are over!

The 1881 census is free to search at various sites, among which www.familysearch.org

There doesn't seem to be an exact match for Henry but there's one (age 21) living in Rugby who could fit the bill - occupation groom.

I'll let you have a look - come back here if you need help or when you want to trace Harriet and Henry further back

Hi,

Would be interested to hear if anyone else is looking at this thread. Have a fair amount of info on the Loydall, Ashby, Hirons connection. Am the grandson of George Loydall, and have connections with quite a few other descendants of Harriet Hirons.

New to this, so hoping someone passes by!
