1821 Braintree census lookup please.
« on: Friday 15 February 08 23:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

About a year ago a kind RC found an entry for me in the 1821 census as follows;

1821 Census, Braintree
Digby, John, Fishmonger    4 male, 1 female

I have been advised today that further information is now available as follows;

John Digby is given as 27 years old, a hawker from Bocking, No other names are given, but his wife is listed with him as being 26, and they have 2 sons aged 4 and 2, and a daughter aged 1.

Would really appreciate if someone who has access to this 1821 census, could check the image and confirm or dispute this additional information for me please. Also when the census took place in 1821.

Many many thanks

I don't know of any detail relative to Braintree but if you google '1821 Census' you will get some hits which give info on when and how this census was done.
I have a faint recollection (not necessarily correct ::)) of seing a microfiche at Essex RO which gives some detail of 1821 censuses in some Essex places

Evening Clincher,

Well it is here, in a flooded SE Queensland, certainly not the sunshine state at the moment  :'(

Thanks for the info, have googled and now know that 1821 census was conducted in May (which was good for me as the daughter was born in March).  However I was under the impression that only the head was accounted for, everyone else, merely a number.  I guess that is why I am questioning this new information ???

thanks for your input

bye

1821 Census, Braintree    DIGBY

Coggeshall Lane
Digby, Jas.  postlad   1 male, age 21 - 30
           1 female, age 21 - 30

New Street
Digby, John   hawker   3 male, 2 under 5, 1 21 - 30
         2 female, 1 under 5, 1 21 - 30

Hoppitt
Digby, Jos/Jn? bricklayer  4 male, 1 under 5, 1 5 - 10, 1 11 - 15, 1 21 - 30
             3 female, 1 under 5, 1 5 - 10, 1 31 - 40

Digby, John    brushmaker   1 male, age 31 - 40
            2 female, 2 age 21 - 30

Drury Lane
Digby, John   fishmonger   4 male, 1 11 - 15, 1 16 - 20, 1 21 - 30, 1 51 - 60
            1 female, age 51 - 60

These are all Digby listed in Braintree, so plenty of Johns to choose from!

From preamble:

D/DU 65/83 Braintree 1821

NOTES
1. The Return is found in a bound book (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 ins) at Essex Record Office,
Chelmsford, and is handwritten by a group of persons.

[details of census-takers and population growth]

4. It has not been possible to include relationships and actual ages (which are found
in the front part of the book) in this copy. Users finding names of interest are
advised to refer to the original for this information.

5. All names have been copied, as have occupations (where given) but some supplementary
information (added at a later date) has been excluded through lack of space.

It appears that you have 2 John Digby, one a fishmonger and the other a hawker.

And it is possible that more detailed information is available.

Given that John Digby, Hawker, later becomes a Fish Monger, it is at least possible that
John Digby, Fishmonger, is his father  ??
