Drowning
« on: Saturday 16 February 08 01:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello.

Where might i find a record of a drowning "in a whirlpool" sometime in the later half of the 19th or very early 20th centuries?

Patrick Walsh and his wife, Catherine, nee Fitzpatrick, were parents of Mary Walsh, b 1859, who emigrated to Australia in c1880 and established a life in Queensland.

Mary's parents i'm told died in a whirlpool drowning and i'm not sure where to look for a record of this.  They farmed in County Clare; Mary was born in Kilkee.

Julie.

The local newspaper might have reported tragedies such as drownings but you probably need to know the date of death to look anything up. Would there be a gravestone with their names and dates recorded somewhere?

Several other mentions of near drownings at Kilkee here but not the one you are looking for:

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi there!

I was wondering if it was the Corryvreckan whirlpool?  I've been surfing the net on this one to no real avail in terms of death records.

Are there other whirlpools in the region?

Thanks
Julie.

It might be worth contacting Clare Library at:  mailbox@clarelibrary.ie as they may hold some relevant records, or your query might ring a bell with someone.
