Hi J J,

Thanks for the suggestion - I didnt want to be doubling up all over the place. But maybe its better  being ' out there '   for all to see.   :)

Cheers, Chris

Hello,

I have finally received the certificates about the Marchant girls - Sophia, Eliza & Sally.   :D
They all came out to Aust and married.  Sally died in 1903 (Phthisis) dont know what that is !  Then Sophia died in 1908 from TB.

Another name fro TB

adding a link to each other when mentioning the people from another thread is always a good idea. Just in case someone duplicates information & resources...
so I have added a link back there...If you post there add a link back here....

re: your question earlier...yes, it gets harder once you get past the censuses... Usually newspapers & directories...which show owners or primary leaser of residences only are often all that are available.

To find the answer to what "Phthisis" is look in here...
One page says: Phthisis is an archaic name for tuberculosis.

and actually...having read through again...I fail to see the connection to the Marchant children...can you fill me in?

Hello J J,

Brief history:

Marchant children in London abt 1882- orphans.  Frances sent to Canada in 1883 age 13.   Sally, Sophia & Eliza sent to Aust.
Frances marries Robert Hunter in 1887 in Canada.
Sally m. George Fieldhouse in Aust - died in 1903 - had one daughter Gladys
Sophia marries James Brennan in Aust - died in 1908 - no children
Eliza marries Joseph Walter Jenkins in 1896 in Aust.

In 1964 Gladys and her husband do a round world trip.  They keep a travel diary which I have.  When visiting Toronto  there is an entry saying Gladys was thrilled to meet her first cousin Walter Jenkins for the first time and his wife Sadie.  The diary actually states (son of her sister Leila).  They had lunch together.

So......I am wondering if Eliza / Leila is one and the same and that she went to Canada to be with sister Frances and brother, after her two sisters in Aust had died.  It's the only thing I can think of.

There were also two Marchant boys - one joined Frances in Canada in 1886, the other joined the Navy and I have not been able to trace him.

So far have been unable to find birth of Walter Jenkins in Aust and deaths of Eliza & Joseph Jenkins ..... but still looking.

Hope I have explained this logically and you can understand.

Thanks for the bit about Phthisis.

Cheers, Chris

Hi,

I have found a bit more on the Jenkins:

They are back in the UK in the 1901 census -
Joseph Walter R Jenkins Head, age 37 Fitter & Engineer
Eliza Sarah his wife age 27
Reuben WJ son age 3 born Essex
Joseph Walter son age 2 born Essex
Jane Jenkins mother age 64

Then in the 1910 US census they are living in New York:
Joseph age 44
Elizabeth age 34
Reuben age 12
Walter age 11
William Marchant age 33 brother in law.

And I found a marriage for Joseph Walter Jenkins in 1920 in Ontario to Sarah Ann Sutcliffe.

Was so pleased to find all this and fill in some gaps about Joseph Walter Jenkins..........at least I can now connect this Joseph Walter Jenkins to the Walter mentioned in the travel diary.   ;D

Sorry to go on and on.........but its nagging away and one is never satisfied and wants more.    ::)   I dont know if I can find out  more - can anyone of you experienced chatters give me any tips.

Where do I go now  to find out more about Joseph Walter Jenkins and wife Sarah.

Thanks everyone, Cheers from Chris in a heatwave in Aust.
