Uniform Identification please- Up Date
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 08:05 GMT (UK) »
This is a picture of my grandfather Arthur Frederick Hambling he was a Lighthouse Keeper. I know this isn't a Trinity House uniform. The photo would have been taken in the 30's or 40's, the mystery is at that time he was still working as a Lighthouse keeper stationed at Anvil Point near Swanage. I know the house, in fact the house is still there. If it's any help the house is between Musbury and Axmouth in Devon. I’ve been told it’s an army uniform. According to relatives he wasn’t in the army besides he would have been exempt if working for Trinity House.

Mazzie 74 from the photograph restoration board thinks it is the Home Guard

Well that is a 1940 pattern uniform, as worn by the Army and RAF (in blue)...

I have seen a pic of a rescued Naval chap in one of these, with his own badges applied.

I've a feeling that as this chap was with Trinity House...and he was at the sharp end of the defence of the realm...He could well have been Home Guard...

He also appears to be wearing his Trinity House cap...but not the accoutrements  of a HG chap, ie his webbing and weapon...

There is no reason why he wouldn't have have been in the Home Guard, but that is not a hat usually worn by members of the HG, so he may have been caught between shifts!
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Now that is interesting about the cap, I sent the pic to Trinity House there comment was its not a Trinity House uniform. I would have thought they would have mentioned the cap.

Thank you very much for the informative  info. I might just trot along to Seaton and Axminster museums with this one. You never know they might like a copy.

I have found a very small picture of Arthur Fredrick Hambling in full Trinity House uniform and I must say the hat looks the same as the one he's wearing here.

Up date.

This is the uniform worn by the Voluntary Cost guards, thats why he is wearing his Trinity House cap.  Colour of uniform would be karki.

Thanks for helping
