Don't forget the constant sound of running water near the staircase, too.

There isn't a great deal hugh Wallis could do with the 'I' batches, because there are no descriptions for them whatsoever under 'Source Information', and the body of the entry usually just says London, or even worse, Westminster!

RG7/102-110 and 121-127 are indexed as identifiable 'M' batches, but that still leaves over 100,000 entries ie 50,000 or so marriages, allowing for duplicates and forgeries.

I'm not sure that the "I" batches haven't been added since the Hugh Wallis site was last updated - like others of us it's beginning to show its age!

I think you're probably right. There are certainly things in other 'I' batches that I know weren't here before, because I'd been looking for them.

hi all
many thanks for your comments & advice, i,m not sure john was a baptist, but as i have been unable to find his birth in the st albans area, have checked the 4 saints parish records, i began to wonder if he might be a baptist purely because his son john who went to aus, belonged to the jireh baptist church.
John senior married henrietta bearup in london c1823, although the i.g.i say in hertfordshire c1827, it was a submitted entry, so not sure how they came bye their info,
will carry on searching, loathe to let this rest, of course it may be that he was not registered at all, so unless i can find a clue somewhere, i,m equally stuck
once again thank you
regards marcie

Have you checked the Bishops Transcripts for St Peter St Albans since there are other Doggett baptisms at the same time including one who in the censuses is a bricklayer like John? Have you checked for wills?

For the BTs yes, for wills you can just email Hertfordshire Record Office. All county ROs have their wills indexed.

The "My Ancestors Were Baptists" book by Geoffrey R Breed, (Society of Genealogists) ISBN 1-903462-52-5, contains lists of what Baptist records are deposited where.

For St Albans, this appears to be virtually nothing.

St Albans, Dagnall Lane, (founded 1675), Births & Burials for just the short period 1822-1837 are in RG4/674 at TNA, but that seems to be about it, so far as I can see.

They are also the only St Albans Baptist registers recorded as held at HALS at Hertford (PC26/2)

Unless anyone knows otherwise, of course (!)

As an aside, I'm interested if anyone has been successful in finding records for any of the Baptist Chapels in, or surrounding Tring, Herts.  I'm particularly interested in New Mill Baptist, where it seems some of the records were in private hands at one point.

Many thanks,
