McCarter
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 16:13 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the death of my great great grandfather Thomas McCarter, born ca 1834, who died, I believe, between 1865 and the 1871 census.
At the 1861 census he was living in Albion Row, Byker, Newcastle, and was a potter by trade.
I'm unable to find his death in FreeBMD, despite trying several variations on his surname!
Perhaps somebody may know of a likely graveyard where I might find a headstone, assuming that he died/was buried at Byker.

Thanks!

Hi

Freebmd is only a partial index still being added to by volunteers

You will need to search the full GRO index  which is available at your nearest main library if you live in the UK.  It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

Thanks Carole - yes, I had allowed for conception of children before his death! In fact his youngest daughter was born in 1868, so he must've died between ca. 1867 and 1871

Looks like I'll have to consult the St Cath's index... :-(

Actually I haven't yet checked on Ancestry - I haven't been dealing with this side of the family for some time.

Hi

If this is the right Margaret McCarter in 1871 then Thomas must have only died around 1870.  In 1861, their youngest child was Susannah aged 2

All b Gateshead and living at Wharton Terrace Gateshead

Margaret McCarter 32 b Gateshead widow
Mary Ann 15
George 11 months
Margaret 11 months

Hmm - I wonder if they moved house after the 1861 census. Thanks anyway. BTW, I couldn't find Thomas in the GRO deaths, but there is one page not showing - I bet that's the one!

Anyway, it's not urgent - I have loads of others to deal with, so I'll pursue this one more fully later.

Cheers -

As there seemed to be not far to check, the twins were born Jun Qu 1870, I've checked from Sep Qu 1869 to Jun Qu 1871 for all possible spellings of McCarter and found nothing for Thomas in the GRO indexes, except for a Thomas who died in 1866 (on freebmd) aged 0, perhaps worth checking with the register office to see if it's a mistranscription.  Looks as if Susannah died in 1869.

I'm aware of Thomas, who was born and died in 1866, and Sarah, who similarly was born and died in 1868 in Gateshead, so it looks increasingly possible that their dad Thomas (b1834) may have died in Gateshead, although he may have died at work at a pottery in Newcastle. Of course there were numerous potteries all over the North East (as elsewhere).
George and Margaret, their twins, were apparently born around 1860.
Yes - Susannah did die in 1869.

It does make you wonder whether Margaret's 1871 census claim to being a widow was absolutely true... ;-)

I think I may go for a wee drink and a lie down...

...and a look through the 1871 census for him  ???   :D
Maybe he went home for a visit and died in Scotland, have you checked scotlandspeople?
