Navy Confusion please help ww2
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 20:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I think I may have found who I believe to be my grandfather on a ship, heading for canada in 1941.
The ship is called Olaf Fostenes, and was destined for Halifax Canada on the 7th November 1941.
It states on the record that the ship was Cunard White Star Limited Steamship Line.
I have googled the Olaf Fostenes was a norwegian ship.
My Grandfather was in the Merchant or Royal Navy.....so what are the chances of hi being on this ship, which is Norwegian.
I am a little confused about this!

Can anyone shed some light on it for me?

Thanks

Colleen

It was not unusual for Royal Navy  personnel to be sailing on merchant ships as guns crews, signalers and the like.

Alternatively he could have been sailing across to Canada to crew a warship on the return leg home, also not unusual.

There are endless possibilities really.
