Scotswood Road
« on: Wednesday 20 February 08 18:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Wonder if anyone can help.  I've come to some brick walls way back in my tree and have decided to see if I can fill out some of the more recent info.  My dad was born 1937 In Scotswood Road (no 456), Newcastle.  On his birth certificate it say his mother was a fish shop worker.  What I'm trying to find out is was this a fish shop (fish monger) or a fish shop (chip shop)?  Dad wasn't raised by his mum, he was raised by his grandparents (although he did see his mum a little when he was very young) and doesn't remember which it was.  He recalls being told it was on Scotswood Road and that it was owned by an italian man.  Is there anyone who might know this information, or know of somewhere I can find out?  I live in Glocestershire so trip to Newcastle is not on the cards in the short term. I've tried googling Scotswood road but get very little returned on the history.

Thanks

Nadine

Thanks Nicola,

I've had a quick peek and will look at it in more detail later.  Funnily enough i found the Jimmy Forsyth book on Amazon yesterday and have it on order.
Thanks again for your help.  :)

Nicola,

Just noticed you've got Sprague in your surnames from the Devon/Somerset area.  My son's coach at rugby (here in Dursley, Gloucestershire) is a Sprague - Phil Sprague.  I don't know how common the surname is but could he be any relation to you??

Nadine,

Trade Directories of the era of your dad's birth might throw up some relevant info.

Some directories are on line on the historicaldirectories web site.

Never heard of a fish shop being a research brick wall.

My contemporaries and I would call a fried fish shop a " Fish Shop". And the other one would be Fishmongers or  "wet-Fish Shop".

Thanks Michael, I'll try the trade directories.

It's not the fish shop that was the brick wall, it's the ancestors!!   I started to fill out some of the finer detail for more recent ancestors because I seem to have come to a standstill tracing further back.  On one side there are too many people with the same name to know who is who and on the other, I can't find a birth at all.

Anyway, I have established that it was a fried fish shop so that narrows it down a little.

Thanks for your help

Nadine,

"too many people with the same name"

If by that you mean -same first name- ? then familiarity with the conventions of the English Naming Pattern can sometimes provide good clues....

e.g. Search is for the names of parents of a person or couple...
A couple name their second son James... after the name of mother's father. First dtr is named after mother's mother... and much more... (Google "english naming pattern" for all eight or so "rules" )

Hi Michael,

No, unfortunately it's the surname as well.  Someone else also told me about the naming patterns and that has been useful along the way, to confirm the odd thing, although it's obvious from my family tree that everyone was either named after a father, mother, grandparent, aunt or uncle as every sibling in every generation pretty much gave their children the same names.    My problem is my 3x ggrandfather was born in Tanfield Durham in 1817, the illegitimate son of one Sarah Richardson.  There's no other info on the parish record that I got from Durham records online (like an area/address - some records I have say 'native of',  just 'of' or 'of this parish' and give a place, but there's nothing on Jonathan's birth entry other than his mothers name, and unfortunately there are rather alot of Sarah Richardsons in and around the area at that time.  I have no idea how I would get back any further.

Once again, thanks for your help
