1851 census:-

Where born:-   B Subject, Germany

Does this mean the person was British but born in Germany??

Thanks, Ditsy

Almost certainly. If they were foreign-born, and natutalised, it would say 'Naturalised British Subject'

Confirm "mean_genie's" reply.

My ggg aunt's birthplace in the 1851 Census is shown as "France. British Subject". Her father and mother were English, and had a boarding school in Le Havre, France, where she born. The parents were actually married in the British Embassy Chapel, Paris.

Thanks for the replies.  I have managed to dig a bit further and found the family on the 1871 census w :)hich states: Naturalizee, Germany.  Sorry to sound thick but what does this actually mean and will there be further records I could trace with this.

If someone was naturalised the records are in The National Archives, and can be searched by name in the Catalogue. You can find details in the Research Guide:

PS Glad I said almost certainly in my earlier post  :)
