Hi Jack,

There were no Pearce stones, none on th MI either but the MI just covers the ground that was St Helen's churchyard. The cemetery at Eston was extended several times ( still being extended )

I often walk through the cemetery so I'll keep the name in mind. What was your GGrandfather's job in Eston ? I presume He moved to South Bank to work at Clay lane or Bessemer works ?
There's some info on Eston on my website at www.marton.demon.co.uk ( plus a bit of other local history )

Hi Mike,
Thanks for looking. I recognised your website as soon as the link opened, it must be three years since I looked at it and that was a good reminder to look at it again, thanks.
My great grandfather Thomas Pearce was a Charger blast furnace/furnace keeper. He lived at  10 Eston Junction in 1871 where his first children were born then had some children at South Bank. He must have returned briefly to Eston and lived at 25 Miles St before going to live in Middlesbrough by 1884.
Just discovered today that he was in No.3 Row No.80H, Eston. in 1861 before he married. Would that give an indication as to where he worked?
With sincere thanks, jackh

Hi Jack,

No.3 row house 80 was at Eston Junction ( became Branch End ) which was right next to the Iron works of Bolckow and Vaughan.
The charger would be the man who fed the top of the furrnace with the Ironstone, coke, and flux material. The Ironstone ( not iron ore ) was mined from the biggest Ironstone Mine at Eston, actually in the eston Hills.
Here is a picture of Branch End ( houses in the middle background ) and the Blast Furnaces of Clay Lane, these where replaced by three bigger furnaces later on and now the site is occupied by a big open space !!
Also a picture of the demolition of these.

hope these come out ok, had a bit of trouble trying to send as one was still a bmp file, doh..
