109 Pickering St Torornto: in 1940 what was the district like etc?
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 17:25 GMT (UK) »
In 1943 the Toronto Directories give Henry HARGREAVES as living at 109 Pickering St Toronto. I don't know his occupation- either architect or publican I'd assume.

I don't know Toronto at all and so would be glad if someone could tell me what the district is/was like.  Would that address have been for a house or an apartment in 1940s? Where is this in relation to Toronto as a whole?

Are the buildings there now the same as those fron the 1940s?

Any info at all  very welcome and thank you,
charlotte

Hello Charlotte

You can pop the address in google maps and you will see it is in the east end of the city.
http://maps.google.com/

It is in the Upper Beaches area:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_Beaches

and specifically in the East End-Danforth District, known as The Danforth or Danforth Village:
http://www.toronto.ca/demographics/cns_profiles/cns62.htm

It is just north of The Beaches a very popular area:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beaches

"Along this stretch of the Danforth, homes vary in design between modest to mid-size two to three bedroom semis and detached homes, compact one bedroom bungalows, and even some townhouses.  Homes in Danforth Village are very much a continuation of the same mixture of house styles from the 1920s to 1940s found in the adjoining Upper Beaches neighbourhood, and the southern stretches of East York."

Linda,
Thank you very much for all that info and the urls.  Haven't gone to the links yet but I get the idea - it sounds rather nice-
I'll try google earth but am on dialup so maybe it won't work.  I'll see.

Thank you again,
charlotte

Your welcome Charlotte

Check out the Real Estate Links, particularily the last one. It is a tour of some homes in the Beaches and continues via a link at the bottom of the page.

I lived a little north of there about 30 years ago.

Cheers,
Linda

Linda,
Have been checking out the links you gave me. googleearty unfortunately says that it does not have that level of detail of Pickering St yet-bad luck.
As you suggested, the real estate site gives a good idea of what it is like now.
Thank you again and isn't the net wonderful... how did anyone make progress "in the old days"  using snail mail and trying to guess where to get info and ideas.
