How do I find Peter HOGG and John HOGG? NZEF
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 18:45 GMT (UK) »
Peter HOGG was the brother of my Nana (g.grandmother Barbara Hogg)

He was born in 1891 and emigrated to NZ in 1912 with his brother John (b 1888)

I believe his name is on a war memorial in Roberton, Roxburghshire. The family home was at Todshawhaugh.

Can I find any more about where and when he served and when he died? I dont like him not being remembered  :-\

Tx

There are two Peter Hoggs on CWGC, both in the Royal Scots. One is the son of John and Elizabeth Hogg of Edinburgh. No family details given for the other one. There are none from the NZEF.

Sorry,

Peter enlisted in the NZ Expeditionary Force. I found a reference to him through the Auckland museum site. I just wanted to know if there were any service records available. Or if I can find out when and where he died.

http://muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/general/RecordDetail.aspx?datasetID=588&SearchID=676674&Ordinal=1&Dataset=Cenotaph&OriginalID=96309

His parents are Alexander HOGG and Agnes JEFFREY.

Tracey,

I don't suppose you are in NZ are you?

They have his service record at the Archives in Wellington.

I found the catalogue reference on www.archway.archives.govt.nz

Just put Peter Hogg into the simple search

Oh dear,

It was just family talk that mentioned my Nana's brother on the memorial at Roberton. I presumed it was Peter as he was the only person I could find as serving in WW1. John is Peter's brother, they emigrated at the same time in 1912 :(

It looks like both brothers served with the NZ Expedition force.  I'm hoping that Peter survived as its too horrible to think that the two brothers both died. But it would explain why I can not find any records of John after they emigrated.....

My g.grandad (Barbara HOGG's husband) survived but he was blinded.

I think the NZ Archives is my best bet to get to the bottom of this. I'm not in NZ, but looks like the $25 is worth paying to find out.

And thanks mmm45 for the link to the memorial. It one of those places I will have to visit next time I am up North. But now I really want to find out about John too.

Any other suggestions appreciated.
