Nantwich or Northwich??
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 21:58 GMT (UK) »
I have one of my 2x gt Grandfathers _ Joseph Davies. the line I have followed is that he was born in Nantwich abt 1840 - lived in Beam St, his father was a Cordwainer and so was he until the  1861 census. In Sept 1861 he got married in St Helens and today I have found his marriage record where it says he was a ships carpenter. On the marriage record his father was Thomas which was right but he is down as being a labourer. Plus on later censuses 71,81,and 91 Joseph is down as being born in Northwich and is still a ships carpenter.
What are your thoughts on this? Have I got the wrong family before 1861? Would Joseph have changed trades so much and why was his father down as a labourer on Josephs marriage if I have got the right family. I cant find any Joseph Davies's in Northwich for before 1861.

Thanks for that Alli. It is the family that I am doing. I had all the other baptisms except for Joseph - the one I was looking for so am glad to get that one.

Suki, Are you sure you have the correct Joseph's marriage certificate?.
In the 1841 Census there is a Joseph Davies born circa 1839 in Davenham (Northwich area).  The same Joseph appears to be on RG10/3866 (1861) living in St Helens in the Parr area.  He is described as being born in Northwich and is a Ships Carpenter.  This matches with the info you have on the marriage cert.
Hope this helps.

Suki, Your post intrigued me and I looked a little further.  Cheshire BMD has two marriages for a Joseph Davies in Nantwich.  The first was between 1861 and 1865.  There is a Joseph Davies marrying Hannah Fisher.  On the 1871 Census RG10/3173 there is a Joseph m: Hannah with a lodger of the name Mary Fisher -so this could be that family.  The age of Joseph seems to fit with the baptism entry in the previous post.
In this entry Joseph's occupation is ? Boot Rivetter and Hannah is a Boot Binder.  As you know Cordwainer is also an occupation attached to the treatment of leather and Nantwich was famous for its tanneries.
There is also a Joseph Davies marriage on Cheshire BMD marrying an Ellen Ruscoe between 1866 and 1870 but on looking at the 1871 Census (it could be the same Joseph as this one is married to an Ellen, was born circa: 1842 and is described as a General Labourer.   I suppose either of these could still be your Joseph, you would need the marriage certificate of the first to rule out the second.
Good Hunting

Thanks Kathb. The marriage cert I have is the right one. Its to a Margaret Westwell on 8 Sept 1861 at St Peters church Parr. St Helens. everything else I have from then on matches re family ect. I've got a photo of the family's grave which matches from the same church. I've just looked at the 1841 census you mentioned (northwich)and his father is again Thomas but I cant find him on the 1851 census. I hope its not a case of back to the drawing board!! LoL

Yeah  ;D I've finally found the Joseph I was looking for. After trawling through censuses for hours I've found them all. In 1851 the  family were transcribed as  DAWES In 1861 he was down as being born in WILTON, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE when it was clearly WITTON, CHESHIRE on the original census. I've sent corrections for the wrong name on 1851 but you cant yet change the place name. The joys of Family History  ;D ???
I've not found the birth for him yet though :'(
