If your guy was in the French Wars - he may be listed in the UK National Archives site.  so it may be worth trying?

I have found out that women served in the Royal Navy during the French Wars - but were often not listed - and certainly not paid!  So it is hard to find females names - they loaded the guns which was one of the most dangerous jobs ...and paid zilch!
