You can download free trial versions of nearly all of them, and they should all import the gedcom.  I use paf though, as I'm not a fan of family tree maker.

There was a thread about ftm2008 on the technical board and this link came up

very interesting.

I'd missed that - thanks, Silvery. They have removed some very important features. I had thought of upgrading, but I'll stick with my FTM 2005 which does me just fine.

I have just been bought a Family Tree Maker Platinum 2008.

Now ,I cancelled my Ancestry because they wanted a credit card to be used and I only have a debit card ,which was fine until this year.

This is the funny thing ,the Family tree maker cost about  £45.00 .It was from a somerset online store on ebay.So when it came I was surprised to see that I got 6 months free subscription to Ancestry.

I personally prefer my 2005 version as it has the All in One tree facility on it ,which i cannot find on the new one ...yet.But I worked out that it would have cost me about £60.00 to do the 6 months subscription ,so I may have a bargain here ?.
£45.00 ,6 months subscription and a new programme.
Paid by paypal it seemed worth sharing this info.

I agree that buying FTM for the subscription can sometimes be worth it, less expensive than the subscription. I have FTM 2006, which I got for $40 at a Sam's Club, with a $10 rebate. At that time, I got Ancestry for a year with the purchase. I was looking at FTM 2008 last time I was at a Sam's and was dismayed to see the subscription to Ancestry wasn't for as long, but still a good deal. But I like my 2006.  ;D
