I would think the two earliest censuses - 1871 and 1881 - are most likely to be reliable for the birthplace, as the information would have been given by his parents. In both cases it was given as Madeley.

And, as Gadget says, if he had been born in Oakengates he would have been registered in Wellington district rather than Madeley.

I think they surely must all be the same person, though.

That area was a hotbed of movement at that time - some of my ancestors moved around there  ::) - and the  family might have lived in Oakengates for a short while when he was young and he just entered it on one census.

I can't find another registration.

My nan lived in oakengates and went to walsall area to go into service. Alot of the girls did that from that area, Also the men moved to the walsall are to work in the mines.

My paternal side were in Oakengates, and they registered everything in Wellington. However on census forms they put Wellington, Oakengates, Shifnal. Ketley, and all sorts of things, actualy they registered in Wellington but certs show born Oakengate or Priorslea.  All in close enough vicinity, so I imagine you have the right family.  Shropshire History Society are online and are helpful, also the staff in Wellington Register office are so kind and helpful don't be afraid to e mail them.

hi,
my ancestors were Biggs and my great grandfather william biggs was born oakengates which I believe was under Wombridge at the time. his father was Thomas Biggs and mother Charlotte.

should have corrected that to my 3times great grandfather William Biggs born 1830 Oakengates on census but baptised Donnington Wood
