Carliol Square/Sweeney
« on: Monday 25 February 08 17:17 GMT (UK) »
A recent post on Carliol Square and some earlier research has got me thinking.

My wifes maternal grandparents were married in Newcastle on Tyne in 1917 during WWI, his occupation was described as 'Gunner, Royal Garrison Artillery' and his residence at that time was 21 Carliol Street. A search of that address in the 1901 census came up with a rather large house with a big family but no relationship to my gunner.

I was wondering if there is any link between Carliol Square and Carliol Street.

Carliol Square was the site of the New Prison of 1828 and Carliol St connected with it and was erected at the same time in the great city centre rebuilding development now known as Grainger town, the architect being John Dobson. They would have been quite upmarket town houses
The Royal Garrison Artillery manned the Tynemouth gun batteries so he may have used a convenient Newcastle address to avoid complications of banns and special licenses. Could his wife to-be have been a servant in the house?

Not sure were she was but she had a different address and suspect she was living with her parents. I have always wondered wether the marriage was a hasty one as she was only 17! they married on Valentines day and their daughter was born just a couple of months later.

I have been trying to track down his service file and after a while and  a bit of research, a lot of it done by people here I took a punt and got an MIC for a Sweeney and I think it is him, confirmed by the fact that he did no overseas service. I only met him once and he was a bit on the small size so suspect his height may well have seen him fit only for home service.

The street directory for 1916 has eight licensed lodging houses in Carliol St so the area must have gone downhill, probably because of the proximity of the prison. However No 21 is not one of them in that year. What was his wife to-be's address?

I can't locate Weatherley St. Perhaps it was in an outer suburb. But by the way if she was Dora Liddell infant daughter of Thomas M Liddell 33 and his wife Annie aged 19 resident at 29 Middle St, Elswick in the 1901 census then her father was an inspector at the nearby Armstrong gun factory which produced heavy artillery.

On the Sweeney/Liddell marriage I have Thomas Moore Liddell as father of Dora, or Dolly as she was always known, his occupation is shown as a "Wireworker".

I have got the wife of Thomas down as E H Liddell I have however no source (surprise - surprise) for that information.
