Hello JJ

Thank you very much for all that information - that is definitely the right family!

I did look on IGI, but it didn't give me any results for Peter Harpell - the IGI and I don't get on very well together!!  Or sometimes it will say no result one day, and then when I try again later, give me a whole list................

I think that the surname Harpell does sound more Dutch than German........

So I will now settle down and work my through the various Harpell children, wives etc that you gave me, as well as the various links.

Thank you again for your help

Tilly :)

Many Dutch families settled in what was first New Amsterdam (later New York) and their descendants, being Loyalists, were 'asked' to leave the American colonies after the Revolutionary War, were granted lands in Nova Scotia and settled there.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Harris is on the 1881 as " Harras" HARPELL...and he states that they are german...perhaps they spoke German ...as my ancestry is Italian...but they moved to a German speaking town in Austria ...so the next generation had to learn to speak German....
OR they meant the word Dutch to mean "Deutsch" as explained here:
http://german.about.com/library/blgermyth07.htm

I do see several N.Y. and U.S. Harpel as being from Germany...on the 1880...
none said Netherlands so this might just be the case....

to use the IGI as simply as possible,  less is more ....do not put in too much information...
If you just put in Harpell, N.S. and look at the  you can find extracted births for say Stephen's child, Lillianda and see that the mother is Annie Hopkins.
Next you can see if an extracted file exists for the marriage, try with her surname, then without...

Putting the parents only, no names ( in the First Name *Last Name )... into the database...say Luke Harpell & Lydia Arnold...will give you lots of names from submissions...
some of those results can be cross referenced to the tombstones and censuses...
You'll need a lot of paper... big tree!
 ;D have fun...J.J.

Hello JJ
Thank you very much for all that information.

I've heard the Dutch/Deutsch before, but I cannot remembere where - it is a very likely explanation.

I've been practising IGI using the Harpells - practice might make me perfect one day!  Lots of them out there..........
