Lookup please - Janet PEAT 1841c Census/Death
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 03:24 GMT (UK) »
Would SKS lookup for me a Census and Death for Janet PEAT or PATE.

I am working from an 1841 Will of her sister, Mary WEIR in Australia.  Janet
was alive at that time.  Mary's Will states that her sister "Janet lived in
the county of Lanrick(could this be the Royal  Burgh Lanark?) near Glasgow".

Any information/assistance would be welcomed!

Kind Regards,

Christine

Hello Christine

Could you give us some idea of her age in 1841, please. Even Mary's age would help as a guide. Also, was she married and was this a maiden surname or a marrried surname?

There are quite a few Janet Peats/Pates showing for Lanarkshire in the 1841 - birth range 1786 - 1840. I'm assuming the older ones are the most likely but, even then, there are more than one.

Regards

Hello Gadget,

Thank you for your reply.  I am sorry for not giving more information...I am going around in the dark in circles with the Scottish records!... ???

Mary PATE/PEAT is believed to have been about 83 when she died in Australia in 1841.  It's believed that she was abt 1758c at Lesmagahow.

Her brother, the Rev James PATE was born 1748 at Shotts.  Father is said to be William PATE.

She also had another brother, Col John PATE/PEAT.

They were all mentioned in Mary's Will.

Any information/assistance would be most welcomed, Gadget!... :)

Kind regards,

Christine

Oops almost forgot -  As far as we know; Janet PATE/PEAT never married.  Mary referred to her as Janet PEAT.

Cheers,

Hi Christine

I have

Mary Pate bpt 14 April 1765, Lesmahagow - parents Thomas Pate and Isobel Meikle

No James bpt Shotts but

a James bpt. 14 may 1762,  Lesmahagow - parents Thomas Pate and Jane Telfer

a Janet,  bpt. 23 April 1758 Lesmahagow - parents Thomas Pate and Jane Telfer

The only child of a William Peat showing is:

George Peat, 13 March 1769, Shotts  parents William Peat and Jean Rankine.

I searched on P*at* and Lesmahagow and Shotts 1741 to 1770

I'll go see if I can find anything else  :-\

The only ones showing anything close to that age range and b. Lanarkshire in the 1841 are

Boghead, Lesmahagow:

Jean Peat, 60-64, Independent, b. Lanarkshire

and

Castlegate, Lanark

Janet Peat, 55-59, Independant, b. Lanarkshire

There are various Jane/Janet/Jean Pate/Peat/Peate but either too young or not born Lanark. Also those who were living elsewhere but b. Scotland. Very tricky to locate.

You could tried Freecen:

http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

I believe that it is complete for Scotland for 1841.

Thank you Gadget - for all your help.

Mary PATE/PEAT was tried as Mary WEIR at Northumberland, England.  It was thought that WEIR was her married name:

MIDSUMMER SESSIONS 13 JULY 1792

Mary Weir came from the Parish of Hexham in the said County single woman,
and there she pleaded guilty to counts of Larceny on the 17 July thirty
third year of the Reign of the Sovereign Lord, George the Third, King his
Crown and Dignity. Mary Weir of the Parish of Hexham aforesaid was sentenced
to be transported to his Majesties Settlements on the Eastern Coast of New
South Wales for the term of seven years or to any other of his Majesties
Dominions beyond the seas for that time for the theft of one petticoat from
Mary Leighton.

Ah - the one that I recall helping with a while ago.

I'll go check the thread - it was travel from Scotland to Northumberland wasn't it?
