Advice needed
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 09:41 GMT (UK) »
I was having a look around ancestry.co.uk yesterday and came across one of my ancestors. I looked and found it was on a tree which contained all my aunt/Uncles cousins including myself and this guy has even had the cheek to put on a baby that i lost to cot death.

I don't know him from Adam and cant see how his tree meets with mine anyway. The thing is, he doesn't have permission from me or any of the family to have this information.

I think i know who he got the info from and i have addressed that problem, but what do i do with the guy now he has all this info? To say I'm pi**ed off is an understatement.

Best wishes

This is awful Pauline.. is there a contact e.mail for this person.  Perhaps a message to him pointing out how distressed and upset you were to find this information on the web and would he kindly remove all living relatives as he does not have yours or their permission to expose them in this way.

You can but try.

I hope you got a good apology from the third person!
Good luck
Suey

Hi Suey

I have an email for him and i have contacted him and the person i believe resposible for giving him the information in the first place. ( He will not be doing it again).

Up to this point neither have answered me yet.

I have been checking up on what i can and cannot do and i believe ( please correct me if i'm wrong), under the new data protection act, someone cannot store any information about a person without written consent. Also i think i can report him to ancestry for having information that he is not entitled to, if he will not remove it?

Thankyou for the reply, best wishes

I believe Ancestry would remove the living people if you contact them.  I thought that the information on living people was supposed to be automatically hidden anyway.

I think thats pretty disgusting. I have members of my immediate family that I have not put on Ancestry because I wouldn't want to make them public.
I think if you complain to Ancestry then they will respond straight away.
This is no comparison to you but... Someone on there has my g randads WW1 records including his death. The thing is it's not even the same person. They have completely got the wrong person and have connected him to the wrong wife etc just because he has the same name.
You are entitled to be ******off.
Best wishes
Tina

Thankyou for the replies.

As yet this person still hasnt replied to me. If he hasnt replied by Friday evening, i'm going to report him to ancestry

Ancestry do try to protect the living. They change the christian name to living but your surname is still listed. The thing is, from the death of my baby ( of which the full details are listed), people can find me.
I am quite capable of finding his death certificate, birth certificate from the information, hence then my marriage, maiden name, my fathers name etc If i am able to do it, others can also. I do not even have to leave the house to do it.

I'm not against sharing my information on relatives that have now passed away.

Some people are sent to try your patience. I think this is definately one of them.

Thanks again to all, best wishes
Pauline

I have contacted Ancestry about a similar situation and it took them a bit of time, but they did remove the information I asked them to.

Good luck, it is very distressing

I repeatly asked two american people to removed information about my living relative where they got the information from I do not know but it certainly wasnt from me they will not remove it nor will they say where they got it from. 3 months ago I reported them to Ancestry and as of today I`ve never recieved a reply from them either.

I have asked Ancestry to remove living people and they will do it, but it seems to take weeks, even months and a couple more emails.  And I'm so sorry to hear about the lost baby Pauline ... that makes the mans actions even more painful, I'm sure.
