John BROUGHTON - 1891 UK Census
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 23:21 GMT (UK) »
Could SKS please assist me.?    I am trying to locate a John BROUGHTON on the 1891 UK Census.   I do believe that he was in the Rotherhithe area of Surrey at the time.   As he was a Merchant Seaman it is possible that he was 'out of town' at the time the actual Census was done.

Thanking you all, in anticipation.

Jim, in Queensland

Hello Jim,
Do you have a d.o.b. and p.o.b. for John Broughton - did he have a wife or children?

Hullo Suzard,

Thank you for your interest.   All I have on this 'elusive chap' is that he was possibly born about 1864 in Surrey and that he was single at the time (1891) also, that he was a Boarder, living in Rotherhithe.

Regards, Jim

Hi Jim,
From where is this information?  There's no John Broughton (or weird spelling of that name) in Rotherhithe in 1891.  Have you found him in the other censuses?

I have found a John Broughton of correct age -but b. Mauritius (British Subject) -he was a boarder in Wimbledon in 1891 and in 1901 he is with his sister in surrey - his occupation in 1901 is Traveller

Greetings, Jane Masri and Suzard,

Thank you both for your replies to my query regarding John BROUGHTON.     Ufortunately, I know very little about this person.   I do know that he was a Merchant Seaman in the UK Merchant Navy in 1901, and, according to a Certificate I have he indicated that he was born in Surrey, but no date or location is given.    He also supposedly had a Sister named Doris.

Regards, Jim

Hi Jim,
So I suppose the information you have is from the 1901 census & you want to trace him back, finding his parents?  Do you know if he married, if so who & when?  What is the nature of the certificate you have?  Sorry for all the questions but seeing the 'fuller picture' does help to track him down,
