Background information on Howards of Glossop
« on: Monday 03 March 08 04:24 GMT (UK) »
I have an inckling my Howards from Holme, WRY may have come from Glossop in Derbyshire.
Probably no way of proving a link (I have earliest John Howard b Holme 1761) but there are certainly more recorded Howards on the Red rose side of the Pennines than the White.

I discovered today the Howard family of Dukes of Norfolk fame owned the manor from 1606 ish, and created the new centre of Glossop in the 1800s which was known as Howardtown and has streets today named after family Members. I have even found hints of the Howards having residence there from time to time.

Does anyone have background info ? Obviously too may Howards in the area for them all to be family offshoots from the Howards so perhaps they are named as coming 'from howardtown' ? or some other reason ?

It seems "Howardtown" is an 1800s thing so perhaps not

Although my GGfather Haigh Howard (b 1870) does look a bit too aristocratic to be just a hill farmer...
