Nurses in WW1

This query is, I know, like looking for a needle in a haystack, but I don't want to die wondering so here goes. 

A friends Grandfather, William Devereaux, was with the 14th AIF in France and England.  In his diary he talks about a 'Nurse Freshney' in terms that suggest more than a professional relationship.  So, looking for anything on this nurse.

Theres a Sister Frances Freshney of the South African Nursing services on the NA mdal index cards...Looks like she was awarded a medal for bravery.

I can find reference to two nurses via:

 has three hits for what I think is Frances (as F. Freshney or F. H. Freshney) travelling to S.A., and one in 1930 for Mildred Freshney, going to France (she may have traveled that way more than once, but presumably only this one shows up as the ship must have been going onwards to a port outside Europe).

Mildred (and maybe Frances also - I would bet she's a cousin if not a sister of Mildred) may have been the daughter of Thomas Bennett Freshney, who married Maria Darnill in 1871. In 1881 they are in South Somercotes with several children. Thomas died in 1906 and Maria in 1911 (freebmd).
