Medal Cards and the Ancestry Site
« on: Monday 03 March 08 23:57 GMT (UK) »
Despite having names, numbers and regiments of family who served in the army in WW1, I have found nothing on the medal cards or on the Ancetry alphabetical lists.  Is this abnormal.

Am I correct inassuming that perhaps 10% of the WW1 records survived the London bombing in 1940and that there are hospital records still available.?

The MICs online at Ancestry are incomplete until they are  put on fully  by the WFA you should be able to find the others at the NA Website.Be aware that if your rellies didnt serve overseas they may not have a card and also some are missing and they may have been issued several service numbers throughout.

The Pensions and Service records are also incomplete on Ancestry at present so again you may have to go to the NA or get a researcher to look up for you.

Apparently up to 30% of records are still around in various states of readability after the blitz in 1940.

If you select a common name like 'john', both on the TNA MIC site and on Ancestry, you find that only 41% are on Ancestry. I would be interested to know the % you get for the surname you are interested in you.

mmm45...I thought that Ancestry are claiming that all the 'pensions' files (ie WO364) are now online?

Ken

PS: A tip I learnt on another site for the pensions files on Ancestry, is to press the green 'back' arrow, as Ancestry often 'point' at the enlistment/attestment page, when in fact the record can be wrapped in a few pages of discharge papers.

Sorry mmm..I meant Ancestry are claiming that whatever is in WO364 is now on line. If they never made it to WO364 when it was microfilmed,  they might be in one of the PIN series, or else they  have been culled.

Hi Ken
I think we all know the joy(!!!) of searching through the Ancestry filing system and finding a few "misfiled" records only wish it could have been some of "my" lads :( :(

Thank you for all the info.  I am not overly familiar with the sites.

I have the following names and service numbers

John Wm Clegg bc 1880
RAMC  Service number 28241
From Castleton, Nr. Rochdale , Lancs

I have addresses for him at Victoria Barracks, Cork, Ireland and Italy. He served  from 1914

Allen Garner 90590
He was a Farrier in civilian life  and his address was to S.S. Garner.  I should imagine that meant Shoe Smith.  He was on the reserve and called to service in 1914.  He was awarded the MM  and made a corporal at some stage in France.  He was born 1885, Rochdale, Lancashire. As far as I know he was in the Lancs. Fusiliers   and was wounded but did not leave the army until the end of the war.

My dad was James Thompson b 1898
He joined the KORL regiment and was in the 1/5th Battalian
Service number 36569  Came from Barrow-in-Furness then in Lancashire

I also had the following

Harry Gabbott in the Life Guards who was wounded and spent time in hospital somewhere.  His birth was c 1885.  He lived Castleton, Nr. Rochdale, Lancashir.

Walter Allen born in Newton, Manchester.  I only know that he was awarded the MM
His birth was c 1894-7

Albert Entwistle from Rochdale, Lancs and lastly
Thomas Garner b c 1878 from Rochdale in Lancs.

I was fortunate to find a small address book which belonged to my maternal Garner grandparents which gave some of the info.  As there are some names  near to the beginning of the alphabet I went into the Ancestry site without result.

Perhaps I have missed something

John Williams MIC here.
£3.50 to download if its not on Ancestry.

Allan Garner

Heres your Dad

Its gonna be quite expensive for all the Medal Index cards when its only about 50p if you were at the NA or free if you have Ancestry and they are actually ON the site i think they will all be eventually transferred to Ancestry but just a matter of time waiting.

Allan Garners Military Medal should have been gazetted in the London Gazette there wont be a citation but should have a name list and where hes from on it.
Its available online to search
