Thank you MM for the sites.  I must be bad at searching.  I will follow up what you have given.

I gave the name Allen instead of Allan Garner because his Christian name is actually a surname from  my Southern Irish Allens.

I only know the Albert Entwistle name and not his number. It is such a help to get info  from people who have used the sites  ;)

You are better than I.  Once again I have entered the National Archives site and put in names,  regiments and service numbers without result and yet you found some for me.  That is strange
I have not looked at the London Gazette, yet, as I am perplexed having no results on the MICs

Thank you but he is not mine.
I have been wading thru the London Gazette names but I have not yet picked up earlier then 1916 but I have found that there is nothing to be learned from the lists except the dates.

For my dad on the medal cards I entered KORL Regt and may be that is why I did not get anything but I do remember last year looking for the John Wm Clegg and the two names appeared on the National Archives list but they seem to have disappeared.

I never thought of just putting A for Allen Garner but I am learning a great deal from Roots Chatters who are the salt of the earth and , of course, you are one of them.

Theres two John Wm Cleggs on the Pension records however 1 was South Wales Borderers and the other lived 95 Athol St Burnley ??

London Gazette is a nightmare to search best of times!!!

Spelling is also a major stumblin block if you had a poor clerk filling cards in you may only find it by chance....Some were lost etc.

Good luck in your searching if you need anything explaining post it here am sure youll get an answer

Ady

Neither are mine but the one in the RAMC which you found on Ancestry was............  I have just noticed that my grt.uncle Allen Garner is using his full name of Joseph A Garner and that he was an acting corporal on the MICs

I thought that it would take forever to go thru all the names on the London Gazette

Hi Norah

Regarding Walter Allen there are over 200 on the TNA MIC website. Ancestry has 144 records (mixture of ‘pensions’ and ‘burnt’). Apart from miss-sorts under other surnames I cannot see them finding anymore.

Five W Allens were awarded the MM, of which the closest candidate is Pte Walter Allen of the Liverpool Regiment, who was born in Miles Platting. By chance his papers are on Ancestry, and his mother’s name was Ann, and he was born about 1897. If you have Ancestry they have him with service number 269562. He was previously 8282 in the 2nd/7th Liverpool Regiment.

To search the LG you need to search for WW1, and enter “Military Medal” in the top box, and “W. Allen” in the exact phrase box. His LG date was 22 February 1918.

His MIC is on Ancestry. But it does not give any more details, apart from the fact that it gives his rank as Corporal.

If he is yours let me know if you need any help.

Ken
