Cornelius Phillips Maiden Newton c1810
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 07:53 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with baptism details for this guy who 1851 census says was born 1810 Maiden Newton?  (1861 suggests 1808 Dorchester!) I would like to think his parents were Thomas and Rosetta nee Withey who married 1806 at Nether Compton but need to make a link. They had two children , Sarah 1814 and Susannah 1816 born in Frampton  (and on IGI) but no earlier ones appear.
Thanks

Have you looked at the Dorset OPC, a site well worth bookmarking.

Have now found him through familyhistoryonline Sherborne 1809/Thomas & Rose; he was Philips rather than Phillips which is why I had missed him.

Hi taylorwallace,
I am also looking for links to Cornelius Phillips c 1810 Maiden Newton, hes my ggggrandfather on my mothers side. I know this message was left a while ago, but did you get any further with the link? I did find the baptism of a Cornelius Phillips in Sherbourn of Thomas & Rose in the Sherborne records, was this accepted as him? really look forward to hearing from you and your connection!!

Hi, Chandlers:
Thanks for your enquiry. I was following up (on an unpaid basis) on some information given to me by a friend at church. Her relative was Cornelius' sister, Sarah Phillips baptised 22/5/1814 at Frampton. Cornelius was a witness at her wedding to James Gillingham in 1837. Their daughter, Eliza Gillingham, in turn married into the Gillett family in 1863 and William Henry Gillett born 1880. He was my contact's g/father.
I assume Cornelius and Sarah were the children of Thomas and Rosetta (Withey) who married in Nether Compton on 15/09/1806. I did not attempt to go back any further on this.
Hope this may be of some help to you in your researches even if I am not connected with the family directly.

Thank you very much for the info, How did you find out about the siblings as I have had difficulty finding any baptisms at Frampton.
I assume then that the family must have moved there from the Sherborne area hence Cornelius is down on the 1841 census as being from Maiden Newton nearby. He moved to Somerset and settled in Broomfield Someone else contacted me with another Cornelius Phillips also from Nether Compton who married a Mary Guppy at NC on the 23 April 1810, but this is after my Cornelius's birth year so assume it maybe his father Thomas's brother??
All very intriguing. Would be interested if you could let me know how I find out about the Frampton records, not much online. Thanks again for getting back to me.

Try family search/IGI and you will find the Frampton record on there. If you are familiar wuith the new version of this site ok but I tend to use the old version which is accessed by link at bottom of the family search page. Hope this helps.
