WW1 Lost at sea
« on: Wednesday 05 March 08 16:48 GMT (UK) »
A relative in the Royal Navy was lost at sea in WW1. His name was Daniel Smith,  born in Portessie, Banffshire in 1897/1898, son of Edward & Helen Smith. I have been unable to find out anything about him, such as when he enlisted, the ship he served in or when he died. Any help would be appreciated.

Can't find him on CWGC  - did he have any other names? He might be listed under another initial if Daniel was his middle name.

Rees(e); Pennsylvania.
Lewis, Llandilofawr.

Have already checked the CWGC - no luck. I don't think he had any other names but cannot be certain. I definitely have the right parents. I have a photo of him which I tried to post but it was rejected as being too big. His cap band has a name on it but I cannot make it out. It seems to start with ATT or something like that. It is possible that he may have married a french lady but I cannot be certain about that either.

Hi Alexena

If he was in the Royal Navy at that time then his service record will be indexed online and available to download for £3.50
