Skelton - 1891 Census, Yorkshire
« on: Friday 02 April 04 11:14 BST (UK) »
Hi there

In reply to your private message:

Hi Chris
Please can I trouble you for another lookup?
My husband's great-grandfather was Ernest Skelton, born 1877 at Slingsby, Hovingham. He was the son of Richard Skelton, born 1839, Wath, and Mary Ann, born 1855 Old Malton.
In the 1881 census the family was at Hovingham, Yorks but Ernest was not with them, he was staying with his grandparents. I would really like to see where they were in 1891 - by 1901 Ernest was working away from home and had married the daughter of the Shepherd family you found for me!
Please could you look for Ernest and his parents in the 1891 census for me? They should be at Hovingham!

RG13/ 3975/ Folio 8/ Page 10 – Hovingham, Yorkshire

SKELTON Richard, Head, Marr, 49, Gen Labourer, born Hovingham, Yorks
Mary A, Wife, Marr, 37, born Old Malton, Yorks
Mary E, Dau, Unm, 10, Scholar, born Hovingham
Frederick, Son, Unm, 8, Scholar, born Hovingham
George, Son, Unm, 6, Scholar, born Hovingham
Arthur, Son, Unm, 3, born Hovingham

Sorry, no exact address given and although there are 28 people in Hovingham with the Surname Skelton; Ernest is not one of them.  Done a national search for Ernest with 20 matches but non aged 13 / 14 that will fit in with the details of your Ernest.

Hi Chris

Thanks a million for finding the Skelton family for me. This is so strange though - Ernest was not with his parents in any of the 1881, 1891 or 1901 censuses. His brother Harry is missing from the one you just sent me too.

If it's not way too much trouble, please could you check their grandparents for me?

They were George and Mary Ruston, and they lived at the Pit Houses, Old Malton, York. They were both born in 1834 - George at Ganton and Mary at Barton le Street.
Ernest and Harry were both with them in 1881 - I wonder if they were there in 1891?

Sorry to bother you again! Thanks ever so much for all your help -

Very best wishes
Jennie
