Hi  :)

His two numbers appear to be a variation of the 5307 number.  Someone will hopefully put you right!

Meantime, here is his SDGW entry:
Reid: Nicol: Peterhead and Aberdeen
McDonald: Greig: Milne: Aberdeenshire
Moreland: Lanarkshire, Whitehaven in Cumbria and Ireland
Cunningham: Lanarkshire, Cumbria and Ireland
Halliday: Falkirk, Stirlingshire and Ireland
Redpath: Stirlingshire and Banbridge

Oooops .... forgot to resize it to  make it a  bit smaller!  ::)

He gained all three WW1 medals, Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

He was killed at the time the Battle of Loos was taking place.  Just have to find out if his regiment was there to be sure.

Hello Chris,

On the MIC that Atom posted that looks like an 8, which could mean that he was in the 8th (Service) Battalion. The embarkation date ties up. They were in 72nd Brigade, 24th Division.

This link to the Long Long Trail will give you the battle history, which does indeed include Loos:

Chris i think the GS prefix is "General Service" .

Ady
Lowe(Lower Gornall-Castleford)
Blackburn (Castleford)
Sidwell(Ledsham)
Fairburn(Hartshead)
Wood(Liversedge)
Tallon (Whittington Lancs/Hartshead West Yorkshire)

Hi Chris !

G and GS, in my experience are interchangable and both mean, as Ady says General Service, and indicate that the person signed up for 3 years or the duration of the war, which ever was the longest.  This prefix was often used by Home Counties Service Regiments.
