That's good you got the GS explained, and some help with the Battle of Loos.

I've come across the S letter for 'Service' battalion, but not the G letter - until now.  ;D

McDonald: Greig: Milne: Aberdeenshire
Moreland: Lanarkshire, Whitehaven in Cumbria and Ireland
Cunningham: Lanarkshire, Cumbria and Ireland

Chris i think the GS prefix is "General Service" .

Hi Chris !

G and GS, in my experience are interchangable and both mean, as Ady says General Service, and indicate that the person signed up for 3 years or the duration of the war, which ever was the longest.  This prefix was often used by Home Counties Service Regiments.
