Monteith Family
« on: Saturday 08 March 08 08:24 GMT (UK) »
My father is Graham Campbell Monteith, born 1938 in England.  His father was Colin Campbell Monteith, 1908 - 1971 of West Hampshire England.  He married May Dove, 1909 - 2006 of Clacton-on-Sea England.  Colin's father was Alan Monteith born approx 1890 of Dorset England.  If anyone has any further information regarding this family line and is willing to share it I would be very greatful.

Hi AdeleAngel,

Can you explain what connection your ancestors had with Perthshire?

Once we can establish that, and who we are looking for, the more chance we'll have in helping.

Anne

I have checked web pages regarding the name Monteith and all seem to point to Perthshire.  My father told me that the name origianated from the men who lived by the river Teeth, in Scotland.  As I have been unable to go back any further than my great grandfather, I started looking at the possibility of a Scottish connection.  Grabbing at straws I guess.

Hi AdeleAngel

You certainly have a line of good Scottish sounding names.  I wondered whether perhaps it was the line above Allan Monteith who may have been born in Scotland, but still not finding that link.

The only Allan Monteith I can see showing on the 1891 census shows an 1877 birth year. I think this might be his birth entry from freebmd:

Births Jun 1877
Monteith    Allan Campbell        Bridport    5a   376

This looks to be the family in 1881:

Duncan MONTEITH   Head  38, Merchants Clerk b. Bridport, Dorset, England
Elizabeth MONTEITH  Wife  29, b. Bridport, Dorset, England
Duncan G. MONTEITH  Son   5,  b. Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England
Allan C. MONTEITH  Son  4,  b. Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England

Address: Bridport Harbour, Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England

And in 1891, the family still showing in Bridport:

Duncan Monteith 48, coal merchant
Elizabeth Monteith 39
Duncan Monteith 15
Allen Monteith    13
Lillian Crocker 11, visitor

Good Scottish names there, but looks like you may have to go back further generations to get the direct link.

Regards.

Monica

Births Dec 1875
MONTEITH    Duncan Gilbert        Bridport    5a   357

Adele -

Did you ever get to the bottom of your Monteiths?

Because I think whilst searching for my own Monteiths in East Anglia, I might have found your family, plus a few more generations....not in Perthshire, but in the South. Although the family may well have come from Scotland at some earlier point.
