8th service Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment (pioneers)

Hi,

My great grandfather was in the Pioneer corps during the Great War. Living near Chichester, I assume he would have been in the above. He was definitely in France, and in the trenches (on burial duties I believe). He survived, but never ever spoke of his experiences (not surprisingly really).  How could i go about finding out more about his time in the army please?  I think he was called Albert Arthur White, (definitely Albert and White not sure about the Arthur!)

Hi Sadie 

It really helps to have a regimental number to identify a soldier.  Sometimes you can find this on the rim of his medal/s along with the unit he served with.

I'd a quick look at the medal index rolls, but there are quite a number of soldiers called Albert White wth the Royal Sussex Regiment.  You ideally want another 'lead'.  Did he not leave any memorabilia!

thank you very much  for your interest and further information. The links are very helpful and I hadn't seen them before.I am hoping my Dad might be able to come up with something else to narrow it down.. unfortunately, he didn't really see that much of his grandfather, his grandmother having died in childbirth.
