Allingham and Magan marriage 1854
« on: Monday 10 March 08 15:26 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
My great great grandparents were William Allingham (not the poet), son of John Allingham and Margaret Irwin, and Esther Magan, daughter of Luke Magan, both born at  Stratore, Fermanagh around 1830.  Wm and Esther married at Monea Church, Parish of  Devenish in Nov 1854.  They had several children including Susannah, my great grandmother born 1866, and later moved to Sligo.  Does anyone have these people in their family trees?  I am particularly interested in the name of Magan and cannot find this name anywhere
Many thanks
Orr, Withers, Allingham

Magan is a very unusual name.

Here are three marriages and one birth that I found at www.emeraldancestors.com:

6th Aug 1846 George Rutherford married Jane Magan at Devenish Church of Ireland in the Parish of Devenish Enniskillen County Fermanagh.

17th Nov 1854 William Alingham married Esther Magan at Devenish Church of Ireland in the Parish of Devenish Enniskillen County Fermanagh.

11th Jan 1872 Robert Denny   maried Mary Jane Magan at Killesher Church of Ireland
in the Parish of Killesher Enniskillen County Fermanagh

Birth on 1st June 1865 of Isabella Magan to John Magan and Anne Brown
Civil District Lisburn Sub District Lisburn County Antrim / Down.

Many thanks to Otto and Mary for their helpful replies to my query about the name of Magan.  It seems my ancestor Esther Magan may have had a sister called Jane.
Regards, Carol

Hello Diogenes99,

It was a lovely surprise to receive your message in response to my Allingham and Magan query.  Thank you very much for the ancestral information in your message which makes very interesting reading. It seems likely your wife and I may be distant cousins through my gt gt grandfather William Allingham and your Jane being brother and sister.

You will have seen from the other messages on Rootschat that William and Esther Allingham had children named Mary-Anne, Susannah, Robert and Eliza-Jane, all born at Co. Sligo where William and Esther seem to have moved to from Co.  Fermanagh.  There was also an elder daughter Margaret born 1862 who died in  Sligo in 1887 of consumption aged 25.  The child Eliza-Jane died of scarlet fever in Oct. 1880 aged 8.

I live in the UK and visited Fermanagh in 2007 where I looked at some church records of Monea Church, Devenish.  I found that  William Allingham was baptised in 1828, son of John Allingham and Margaret.  William had three sisters, Margaret 1836, Mary-Anne 1838 and Susannah 1843.  I did not see any record for a Jane Allingham of 1833 but there is quite a gap between William's birth of 1828 and the next one, Margaret of 1836.  Perhaps I just did not see it or Jane was baptised elsewhere.

By coincidence, the person who showed me the records was called Rev. Kerr.

William and Esther seem to have named their daughters after William's sisters, and Jane Allingham and her husband have also kept some of the family names for their children.  To date, I have been unable to trace what happened to William's sisters.  Of William's own children, Mary-Anne married William George of Scotland in 1891, Susan married Edward Withers in 1887 (and became my great grandparents) and Robert married Kate Brett of Co. Leitrim in 1892.  Robert was in the Royal Irish Rifles until about 1908.  Susan and Robert and their families settled in Belfast.

William Allingham died in Sligo in 1887.  He was a gardener by trade.  His wife Esther died in 1909 at Belfast.

Your message said that Margaret wife of John Allingham died in 1876.  I wondered if you have any information as to where she died and who may have been the informant of the death.

Thank you again for your message.  It has spurred me on now to do a bit more research into the  Allingham families.

Hoping to hear from you further
Regards
Carol

It may be that Jane moved to another village as a spinster.  Or my Jane doesn't fit your tree.   See the record below.
