WELCH Family - Pakefield
« on: Monday 10 March 08 16:06 GMT (UK) »
hello I'm very new to this site & have sent this message to others when may be I should have posted it this way.
My paternal grandfather, great grandfather & great grand mother both lived in Pakefield, Suffolk in Pakefield Street, Cot, the latter I assume stood for cottages. My great grand parents were born in 1840 & 1842 respectively. According to a member of my family now deceased, they were not married & as I’m researching my family tree I cannot be sure of my great grand mother’s maiden name.
My great grand father was a fisherman. Can any one help me please?

Welcome johhanham!

I hope that you will visit us often and make lots of progress with your research.  Please be sure to register your surnames on our SURNAMES INTERESTS TABLE.

http://surname.rootschat.com/

According to the 1881 census James and Harriet were living in:

Pakefield Street Cottage
Kirkley
Suffolk.

James is aged 40 and gives his birthplace as Carlton, Suffolk and his occupation as fisherman.
Harriet gives her age as 39 and her birthplace as Pakefield.

This is freely available online.

From this, I checked the 1851 Census and found the following for James.

1851 Census
HO107/1805 Folio 89 Page 3

The marriage that Sue found would seem to fit well.  Marriage certificates can be ordered online and would give you father's names and occupations.  It would also give confirmation of the census information.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

This looks like John and Hannah on the 1841 Census.  The 41 does not give relationships within families, marital status or exact place of birth.  It only indicates whether or not someone was born in the census county.  Adult ages are often rounded down to nearest 5.

HO107/1029/7 - 13
Carlton Colville
Suffolk

(All born in County)

WELCH John, 35, Ag Lab
WELCH Hannah, 40
HORNING Sarah, 9
WELCH Hannah, 6
WELCH George, 2

I have checked the Suffolk Marriage Index but there is no marriage for the couple in Suffolk between 1813 and 1837.

Rick :)
