Help with place names in WW1 entries
« on: Monday 10 March 08 16:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I have been transcribing some WW1 grave entries and have 3 places that I can not find on the web.

If anyone can help may I thank you in advance.

1. The Military Hospital, Clipstone, Mansfield- Reg District Southwell Russall?
The only one I can find is Southwell Rufford.

2. The Welsh Hospital, Stound, Reg District South Stoneham?

3. Military Hospital, Ragthorpe? Reg District Bulwell, Nottingham.

Hello Sandy,

I found this reference for RBagthorpe and Bulwell on the NA catalogue. They're not in the WO series, but were presumably comandeered at some point.

Have you tried searching for VAD hospital lists.

Clipstone was another camp, I believe.

Bulwell is some four and a half miles north east of Nottingham (Bulwell Hall was once a sanatorium at some stage) and Bagthorpe is situated roughly five miles north west of Bulwell.

Hello again Sandy,

After having thought I had muddled up Ragthorpe and Bagthorpe, (geography north of the Thames not being a strong point), I'm not so sure. Googling for Ragthorpe Nottingham/ Military Hospital and variants only brings up a couple of hits, that may be typos themselves.

I can't find either of the registration disticts you have for Clipstone on Genuki, although I can locate Southwell and Rufford on the map.
Here's a link to Clipstone Camp, that confirms that it had it's own hospital facilities.

South Stoneham Reg District includes Eastleigh, which had a military hospital apparently, but I can't find any Welsh connection yet and Stound is a mystery.

Sandy,

I found this reference in regard to Netley Military hospital at the following site:

http://www.britarch.ac.uk/projects/dob/deflin5/hosparch.html

"War Office model plans were often modified by civilian architects involved in the construction of hutted hospitals.............. One of the earliest hospitals to be established, the corrugated iron Welsh War Hospital assembled at Netley in October 1914, was specially designed so that it could be moved to France or elsewhere if necessary. Thank you so much Phil, Annie and Old Rowley.

I will put a small image showing the spelling and then you may see the problems.

I do not know the areas and more than likely neither did the person making the entries.
