i don't know whether this helps or hinders but...

'soldiers died in the great war' has him as residing in Gloucester

the other address in the 'other details' from the CWGC database are where his parents were residing when the register was compiled after the war

Hello aljepeka,

I can't find any alternatives on the 1891 and 1901 census to the parents I assume you already have; living in Beverley in 1901.
I notice that at the end of Francis's occupation details it says Whitehall. It is possible that if he worked for the central, rather than local authority, that he was moved elsewhere, or went back to teaching/running a school. It may be possible to check on him through Bournemouth directories.

Have you tried looking for Arthur on Cambridge University Rolls of Honour, college magazines of the time etc?

Thank you both for a very prompt reply to my query.
This is the first of the twigs in my tree to go to England and I would dearly love to try to find the descendants of this Harvey Branch.
How did you find out that Francis ended his career in Whitehall and is the info on the net ?
I am new to the military side of genealogy and am unfamiliar with the military sites so your help is appreciated .
Thank you for the info too about Gloucester, I did not know any other military info about him other than what I posted so any new info is great.

Have you looked him up on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site on line?  They give names and address of parents, if the parents supplied it etc.
Worth a look to see if it sheds any light.

Good hunting.

Hello again,

This is a link to Arthur's record on the CWGC if you haven't already got it:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=785706
(Their website was down briefly when I tried to check the link, so bear with it)

The information about Francis being employed by Whitehall I got from the 1901 census image.

Below is a link to the war diary of 1 Btn HAC which covers the period of Arthur's death. He is not likely to be named in it, but it may record the events surrounding his death. The war diary is held at the National Archives and they do provide a copying service (at a price). Don't forget that if he died of wounds, rather than in action, then it could be days or weeks previously. That info isn't on the CWGC entry, but it may be on SDGW (which I don't have access to).

I have just looked at his Medal Index Card and there is only the minimum of information on it, eg name, rank & number.

Phil.

PS I will send you a personal message later today (I'm supposed to be working at the moment  :))
