Hi,

This is fantastic, I'm very new to this and had not found the census entries. Robert Raeburn was my g grandfather, but I can't get any further back than John. No sign of any birth record that I can find.

I think at  least you might get another bite at the apple in terms of knowing who his parents were. I get the feeling from what I am seeing that Christina Fraser may have died before the 1861 census. There is this entry in 1871, indicating that perhaps John Raeburn may also have died before the 1871 census:

1871:

Elizabeth Coburn (Lawson) 27, head, lodginghouse keeper, b. Greenock Edinburgh
John Raeburn    18, step son, b. Huntly, Aberdeen
Robert Raeburn    16, step son, b. Huntly, Aberdeen
James Raeburn    14, step son, b. Huntly, Aberdeen
Alison Lawson    56, mother, , b. Greenock Edinburgh
John Geddes    31, l odger
John Jamisson    22, lodger
Michael Obrien    29, lodger

Address: 154 Cowcaddens St, Glasgow Barony

And a marriage:

JOHN RAEBURN  Marriages:Spouse: ELIZABETH LAWSON
Marriage: 08 FEB 1865  Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

This looks a possibility for mother Christina's death:

1859   RAEBURN   CHRISTIAN  FRASER   U   CANONGATE   EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN   685/03 0287

Thanks Monica,

I've looked on the Scotland's people site and I can't find any likely death record for John between 1861 and 1871.

Any suggestions where else I might try?

Regards,
Rickr

:) This is his death entry on SP:

1870   RAEBURN   JOHN   52   MILTON   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK   644/07 0508

You are going to have fun and games  :P with this one. His birth was illegitimate.....

This is the closest that I can see on the 1841 census for John which may connect with what you'll see on the death cert for John:

Barbara Raeburn 55, Independent
Jas Raeburn    50, farmer
John Raeburn    20

Jane Stewart    85, Independent
Christian Craw    18
Ann Duncan    14

Address: Denhead, Chapel of Garioch

Rick

If you do manage to establish the link to this James Raeburn, he and his sister Barbara (and maybe mother Jane Stewart?) were from Banff.  There are a number of entries for James R in the Wills & Testament section on SP.

Good luck with searches  :)

Hi Monica,
Thanks for the help. I've managed to confirm the link to James and found his parents - Robert Raeburn and Anne Grant. His birth was recorded in 1794 in Gamrie and Macduff parish, Banff.

The next step is to try to find Robert's parents, it never ends!
