Elthread, Edgar and Enoch Howard
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 00:32 GMT (UK) »
These were all brothers born in Rudgewick, Surrey between 1856 and 1867 - despite all having unusual names they all appear to disappear from the census reports around 1881 with no mention of death dates etc.  They can't all have just 'disappeared'?
Any assistance locating them greatly appreciated

The 1881 is a bit odd, he's down as son-in-law which could mean stepson to a James  Swanbury? aged 26 and wife Jane 50

RG11/795 fol.23 p.23
North Holmwood, Holmwood, Dorking, Surrey

have a look and see what you think, looks as if his mother remarried:

marriage Dec 1873    Hambledon    2a 179
Howard    Jane   with  James Swansbury  on same page

Hi Tigsy
A typo I think - Rudgewick is in Sussex, not Surrey

They are all three sons, in 1871 Ewhurst, Surrey Census with parents William and Jane and other siblings:
Ethelread  18 - b abt 1853 Rudgwick, Sussex, England
Edgar 15 - b abt 1856 Kirdford, Sussex, England
Enoch  4 - b abt 1867 Kirdford, Sussex
1871: RG10 /  Piece: 826 /  Folio: 18  /  Ph 10

Enoch's marriage:
Dec Qtr 1898 Dorking  - to Beatrice GREENFIELD

Cheers

sorry Ambly, modified my first post to include the marriage before I realised you'd given the same details.

Can't find Enoch in 1891 though, or either of the other sons after 1871
maybe they went abroad

PS Barbara   ;D  and I modified my first post too, to correct poor Tigsy's name - I had mispelled it to suggest he/she was a bit inebriated - sorry Tigsy!!!!

Oh, well done Ambly, don't know how I couldn't see that one  ::)

Poor Jane didn't have much luck did she, and her 2nd husband was much younger than she was, if the census is correct.

Leaving you to it now (bedtime)

Night Barbara!
Hmm, Looks like James was really 26 in 1881 - he appears to be on 1871 and 1861 aswell with same indicative year of birth abt 1855......that would have made him abt 19 when he married Jane......if that's him marrying her in 1873!

Can't find a death for him 1881 to 1891 either  ???

Cheers

Thank you, I really appreciate your help on this - I have been trying to think of all different possible spellings of their names.  Was their a war that they may have decided to sign up to?  Could they have had agricultural accidents and that is why they disappear?
Its all a total mystery.
Many thanks though for your help on this.
Kind regards
