Does anyone know
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 15:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Please can anyone tell me anything about the NATIONAL UNITED ORDER OF FREE GARDENERS.as I have found a photo with them on and it says on the bottom of the flag Kingston upon Hull branch.I believe photo was taken in 1920-30s.I am puzzled as our ancester was working as a maltster in Grantham Lincs.

Many thanks

Kathy

Hi Bee

Many thanks for reply I have been on both sites mentioned by you and yonderpeasant and they were very interesting to read. Our ancester was a kind caring fellow so it makes sense that he belonged to this group as they acted as friendly societies providing members with financial support in times of need and paying funeral expences to ensure a decent buriel which in the years our descendant was a member in the 1920-30s times were very hard.

Many thanks

Kathy

The 1912 Kellys Trade Direcotry for Hull lists the National United Order of Free Gardeners having their headquaters at 316 Holderness Road with M A Drewrey at the secretary.

Hope this is helpful,

Ian

Hi Kathy,

Glad to be of help.

I have a copy of the East Yorkshire Local History Society booklet entitled East Riding Friendly Societies (1988). Although the booklet does not comment on societies in Hull, it does in the soucres pages mention the following

F. W. Fieke; 'The rise and progess of Friendley Societies in Hull' in Souvenir Handbook of the National Conference of Friendly Societies (Hull, 1915). A copy of this can be found in Hull Local History Library.

Hopefuly, this may give you some info on the NUOFG.

Ian :)
