Northamptonshire Giant
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 21:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone
I have been given a reference of the "Northamptonshire Giant" said to be James Rowlatt (Rowlett) of Tansor. He was said to be 7foot tall and was buried at Tansor aged 69 on 17th Jan 1870.
Is there any newspaper reports achived that gives more details.?

Any other info would be grateful.

Thanks in advance

Hello, I'm a descendant of James Rowlett and I'm trying to find information on him. I have only just found out about him and would love to know more. The link above doesn't work which is a shame. I would be very grateful if you could help me out with some information please?

Found just one newspaper report in the Northampton Mercury 5th February 1870 - James Rowlatt, a native of Fotheringay, he was hired as one of the living prototypes of the giant tribe travelling throughout the country.  His height was represented as above 7ft.   After travelling some years the novelty wore off and he was forced to seek shelter at Tansor, the village adjoining Fotheringay and follow his original pursuit as a labourer.   He attained the age of 70 and his body, though much bent, required a coffin of 6' 9" in length - buried at Tansor.

According to the 1851 and 1861 census James Rowlatt was unmarried - he was baptised 20/7/1800 Fotheringay, son of Thomas and Eleanor.
