COMPLETE Harvey Wilkinson Methodist Preacher Death lookup
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 06:03 GMT (UK) »
Would some kind member be able to find the place of death of Harvey Wilkinson please?

He was born in Kidsgrove Stoke-on-Trent in 1857 and according to Methodist record he died on 2nd May 1928 but no mention of the place.   For many years he was a Methodist Preacher in Africa and I believe he retired to England a few years before his death but I don't know if he died in Staffordshire or in another county.

We think Harvey married in the mid 1880s and it would also be wonderful to discover the name of his wife if possible.

Any help would be great,
shadrach

On free bmd there is a marriage for a Harvey Wilkinson Sept Qtr 1885 in Grantham. Possible bride is Mary Emily Howard however there is a data conflict on the entry with a Fred Piper being named also. It is possible Mary Emily Howard married Fred Piper not Harvey Wilkinson and Harvey Wilkinson's bride is not shown.

Recommend you have a look at this one but cannot be sure if its the right Harvey Wilkinson

I'm not able to help with the question, but did find this link which places him in 1898 at Buntingville, SA
http://www.rootschat.com/links/02yy/

This link has him listed under the South African Methodist Conference as "Harvy" Wilkinson, 1881. I'd guess 1881 is the year he first came under the South African Conference (Conference being a type of governing body, in case you're unfamiliar with the term)

Thanks for your help folks and for looking at lots of possibilities.

Since starting looking for information about Harvey his place of death and name of his wife has proved very illusive.

His obituary and the Buntingville story story give us lots of great detail and are wonderful to read but frustrating in that neither give any mention of his wife or place of death.  It's especially interesting to see that he came under the South African Methodist governing body so early in his ministry.

The marriage for Harvey in 1885 is most probably him but Fred Piper being named too makes it uncertain.   Harvey is connected in some way by marriage to my Staffordshire families and the name Piper doesn't seem to fit.

The link to the book could be him but hard to know particularly as the title suggests a farming rather than a clerical subject.

Like you I found him in the 1881 census but as you say Norma, he does not appear in '91 or 1901 which fits with him being in SA.

Thanks again for you interest and help,
shadrach

Harvey Wilkinson married Annie Leighton who was born in Betley Staffs in 1854 daughter of George Leighton (grocer/draper) b Chesterton Staffs 1821 and Ann Dean 1822-65. In 1881 Harvey was finishing his theological training at Richmond Wesleyan theological College (Surrey). His future wife Annie in 1881 was assistant postmistress to her brother George Henry Leighton at Apedale Rd Chesterton, the address of their parents upto the 1911 census. I don't know where Harvey and Annie were married (maybe abroad) but they went to South Africa in the 1880s and Annie died there (Colesberg) aged 33 on Nov 3 1889. Harvey died in South Africa (Cape Town area) 10 May 1928. His death is recorded in "Cathcart Notes" of the Daily Representative newspaper. He may have remarried and had two daughters Annie and Alice but I don't know if they were by Annie (Leighton) or any subsequent marriage. Rev Harvey Wilkinson is mentioned in an 1898 publication "From Namaqualand to Pondoland. Cape Town - The Methodist Churchman " in 1898.
His father Randle Wilkinson (1826-1897) was the brother of my ggg grandfather John Wilkinson. Harvey's cousin George Wilkinson (b Silverdale Staffs 1856) was also a travelling Wesleyan evangelist, eventually settling in Derbyshire.
I would love to see a photograph of him and daughter.
Regards
Glyn
