Can anyone recognise what this document is?
« on: Friday 14 March 08 07:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Can anybody recognise what this document relates to, or what is being signed for?  It's from Australian WW1 records.

It is signed well before the soldier returned.

Thanks,

Jo

the document it's self is simply a receipt for a document, what might be more interesting is what it is a receipt for ;D

it may well be a rail warrant but as it for a W.O. perhaps the Royal Warrant??

This is a chit were the soldier concerned ( a Sgt Major) signed for his warrant...when he was promoted to Warrant Officer...

Its a piece of paper confirming his position, and (these days) signed by the Secretary of State for Defence...

Just the same as when we have to sign for our commissions...

Army issue, ergo has to be signed for!

Commissions are signed by the Queen...Hence the "Queens Commission"...

Thanks everyone,

We have been puzzling about this document for some time.

That makes sense, wonder if he ever got to see them - the woman never became a family member!...

Mystery solved once again by the brilliant team at Rootschat.

Thanks,

Jo

It's just a single piece of paper...like a scroll....

I've been trying to find a picture of a period one, but haven't succeeded yet...

I'll keep looking...

I haven't got one as I skipped the Sgts mess!!!
