Thomas Charter Royal Garrison Artillery
« on: Friday 14 March 08 16:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone have any information about Thomas Charter? He was born 14 Nov 1874 in Cambridge to Albert and Rebecca Charter.
He joined the army and served in the Royal Garrison Artlllery. He spent time in Malta and Egypt and died in Hong Kong 2 Nov 1909.
Thanks

Tempsford.

Hi

If his papers survive they will be in series WO97 for men discharged 1900 to 1913. But as he died in Hong Kong there is a good chance he was still serving, in which case his papers should have been destroyed after 20 years.

It will only take about 20 minutes to check WO97, but as they are original documents you or your researcher will have to visit Kew.

See - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm

You could also try searching for him in the medal rolls for both the Boer War and the China War. These are in WO100 on microfilm at Kew.

Hi Ken,
Thank you for the information, its very helpful but rather disappointing that his records were destroyed. I will give the National Archives a try anyway.
According to a caption on the back of a  photo I have of Thomas, he didn't take part in the Boer War but went to Egypt instead.
