I can't read the cap tallies in the first photo sadly.

However, I'd say the second photo is no earlier than 1918 because of the 3 overseas service chevrons worn by the sailor on the first.

HMS Gloucestershire is listed here...

Some of the other photos you may find interesting!!

In WW2 HMS Gloucetershire finished off HMS Rodney with a torpedo as she had turned turtle and was a hazard to shiping...
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

2nd photo

Badge on his right arm looks very much like a Gunner 3rd Class.

Sorry for the late reply Salty,

That's a bit more info for the archives

I've been doing more research and it looks like the crew photo was taken between December 1915 and December, 1917.

In August 1914 she was requisitioned for trooping duties and in December 1915 was converted into the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Gloucestershire and served with the 10th Cruiser Squadron. She was deployed on 'E' Patrol between Shetland and Iceland with Royal Mail Line's Ebro.

I have a couple of other photos which I think are of Ebro taken from HMS Gloucestershire

in the aftermath of a sinking and rescue of casualties.

Did warships carry official photographers  ??? ???
