Can you please ID this WW1 uniform
« on: Saturday 15 March 08 19:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
Can you please ID this WW1 uniform (any idea the age of the man?) we are trying to figure out who he is ? the man lived in Ireland.
we know of  brothers that were in the army but are unable to find their military records mainly to do with the spelling of their last name according to a researcher we tried to hire back in 2000
any help or suggestions on how to find military records please,
the photo was one of those postcards photos.
possible men in the family were
James   b 1886(heard he was but not 100% sure)
John b 1888 (have no idea)
Henry b 1890 (according to a marriage cert he was a solider)
Edward b 1896 (according to my Dad he got shellshock and well lost his mind) :(
William b 1904  (according to his descendants was in the army about 1924)

the last name of the above was McMenemy but other spellings were McMenamin and also McMenem(e)y

would love if possible to get their military records
all men were born in Athlone Ireland

with Thanks
Carol

Now this is an interesting pic...

The weapon is a Long Lee Enfield and his belt and bandolier are from the Valise equipment 1882....

Usually I would say that this pic is well pre WW1...and would place it between 1882 and 1888....It could even have been Boer War,as the slouch hat was worn by the Yeomanry units sent out there

BUT....

There is something that says Kitchener to me....

When the men of Britain answered Kitchener's call for volunteers in 1914 they were inundated so much so that they ran out of kit and uniforms. Ergo they had to be issued with obsolete equipment...

Now...the felt slouch hat was worn by the 1st Royal Irish Regt in Salonika in 1916..I'm not saying that this is deffo the Regt, but it is a candidate...

The jacket is also a bit different..It has the cut of a KD jacket (khaki drill) but looks to be dark khaki in colour....

The leathers around his calves and ankles also suggest mounted...But the boots are bog standard infantry boots

He could therefore be mounted infantry

One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Actually Carol, I'm not convinced that this is pre WW1...and for the reasons I stated above... ;)

It may be worth some nice person with MIC access to check to see if one of your chaps were with the 1st bn RIR....

I don't have access on this computer... :(

Hello Carol and Scrimnet,

The only McMenamin that is RIR is Michael, Private 2/2287

I'll check the other spellings in a minute.

In answer to your question on the other thread.... ;)

He looks mid to late teens to me...Very possibly early 20s...

Nothing for Mcmenemy or Mcmenemey under RIR (and that's using the NA search, not Ancestry)

Unfortunately of all the McMenamin MICs on Ancestry, the one for Michael I posted above is missing.
This is the link on TNA; http://www.rootschat.com/links/030a/

A correction to my first post:
Michael was in the Royal Irish Rifles

I've just found a James McMenamin who was Pte 42537, (9) Royal Irish Fusiliers and Pte 41339, (5) Royal Irish Regt.
The figures in brackets have been added to the MIC
He also appears to have been discharged to Class Z Reserve 16/11/19
