finding military records for Irish in the British army WW1 help please photo att

Hi all

we know of  brothers that were in the army but are unable to find their military records mainly to do with the spelling of their last name according to a researcher we tried to hire back in 2000

any help or suggestions on how to find military records please,
the photo was one of those postcards photos.
possible men in the family were
James   b 1886(heard he was but not 100% sure)
John b 1888 (have no idea)
Henry b 1890 (according to a marriage cert he was a solider)
Edward b 1896 (according to my Dad he got shellshock and well lost his mind)
William b 1904  (according to his descendants was in the army about 1924) so we know it wasn't him

the last name of the above was McMenemy but other spellings were McMenamin and also McMenem(e)y (on their birth certs)

would love if possible to get their military records
all men were born in Athlone Ireland

Hello Carol...

Your title for this thread is a bit of a misnomer!!!

Up until Partition, the south of Ireland was as much part of  Britain as Wales or even Cornwall....

It's like saying you are looking for English in the British Army!!! 

Even after 1922, the British Army was still a career choice for many from the south, My own cousin ran away from home in Galway in the 1950s and did 12 years with the Royal Irish Hussars....

And of course many from the south were qualified to vote in English General Elections (possibly this is still the case!)

Now then....To answer your questions (at last!!) 

All of the records that remain for the Army at this time reside at Kew...So the website for the National Archives is a starting point...

I would also commend looking at the medal index cards for the variants on your chaps names.

Another avenue are the local newspaper achieves. Many men killed or not were commemorated in this way.

For the chap who had mental health problems, the key word to look for in the pension records is "service patient"...

If you have a photo of any or all of them as you seem to allude...pse do post it...It could be of enormous help!!!

Hello Carol,

If you can scan the photo and post it here, some-one may be able to identify which regiments they were in and narrow the field a bit.

I have found a Medal Card for an Edward McMenamin, Private, No. 27647, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, who was awarded the British and Victory Medals and also the Silver War Badge.
The Roll reference for the SWB is List B/1182.

He is not on the Pension records on Ancestry, though.

Does he look like one of yours?
