Thanks again, but to be honest i am only asking and not expecting miracles. if people are happy to help then I more than appreciate it.
Also she was Mercer in 1871 so she was Debnam for only 1871 - 1873!

My last reply was intended to give you an indication of what is involved when a BMD has not been transcribed and  the potential time it could take to find it on the GRO index.

In your opening message you say that Emma was b 1847 in Hitchin.  The Emma Mercer you refer to on the 1871 census is indexed as born 1837  although it is debatable whether her age is 24 or 34 on the image

All details are subject to enumerator mistakes however the census sheets have her as Mercer in 1871 so it would have to be the enumerator in 1871 that put it wrong. But in 1861 her date of birth is estimated at 1846. So anything is possible. The truth is that all we can find is the Debnam/Hailey marriage. Hence the title being a Mystery.
Once again i was hoping someone could see something i may have missed!

From BVRI

HAILEY, James to Emma DEBNAM
4 Oct 1873
Hitchin, Herts
Wife previously married
Husband's Father:   Daniel HAILEY
Wife's Father:   George MERCER

Emma's previous marriage is not recorded on the BVRI so as Carole has indicated, you will need to check the complete GRO Indexes.

Rick :)
